All Hail Mario Kart!
Nintendo racer named most influential game in history

The 2009 Gaming Edition of the Guinness World Records has hit store shelves with an intriguing and highly controversial list of the Top 50 most important and influential videogames in history. Using a mushroom power up to speed into first place was Nintendo's Super Mario Kart, it's case helped by the fact that various iterations of the series are the best selling racing games for SNES, N64, Gamecube and DS.

Narrowly missing out on the top spot was Tetris, another massive seller that has appeared on countless formats, and still proves to be a massive seller in the mobile phone and hand-held worlds. Rounding off the top three was the original Grand Theft Auto, which started the ball rolling for the 3D open-world GTA titles we know and love today (and can nowadays be downloaded for free from Rockstar).

The list is credited to "a crack team of industry experts", but judging by the full run down, there appear to be some rather controversial decisions on show. Over on our sister site GameBosh.com, you'll soon be able to check out the full list from 50-1, along with comments from the team.
